Funding of 42 new SNSF professorships

In February, the SNSF awarded 42 new SNSF professorships to outstanding young researchers. They will take up their posts at eight Swiss universities and both federal institutes of technology.

The highly qualified young researchers will receive an average of CHF 1.48 million per professorship over a four-year period, sufficient for them to conduct an independent project with their own team at a Swiss higher education institution. 38% of the grantees are women scientists. The overall share of female SNSF professors up to now (2000-2017) corresponds to 31%. Since 2013, the share of female grantees has regularly been over 35% per year.

The 42 SNSF professorships are distributed across the higher education institutions as follows: University of Basel 7, University of Bern 5, University of Fribourg 3, University of Geneva 4, University of Lausanne 3, University of Neuchâtel 1, University of Zurich 13, EPF Lausanne 1, ETH Zurich 4.

In accordance with the regulations introduced in 2009, the SNSF also awarded three professorships in fields with a clinical orientation. SNSF professors in these fields (26 awards since 2010) benefit from optimum working conditions that are tailored to their needs.

The SNSF has awarded a total of 691 SNSF professorships since 1999, the year the scheme was launched. Of the former grantees, around 80% obtained professorships, most of them permanent, after completing their grants.
