NRP 54 “Sustainable Development of the Built Environment“

The National Research Programme “Sustainable Development of the Built Environment“ (NRP 54) focuses on sustainability as it relates to buildings and the development of the built environment. It will establish methodological, scientific and technical fundamentals for the integration of principles of sustainability into the development of the built environment in order to meet the requirements of modern society.
The specific objectives of the three research axes are:

  • to enhance knowledge in the functioning and evolution of the built environment;
  • to integrate all aspects of sustainability into a creative and integrated design and planning process of the built environment; and
  • to integrate all aspects of sustainability into the operation and management of the built environment throughout its life-cycle.

The NRP aims to provide various actors (public officials, the private sector and builders) with the basis for the development of practical instruments necessary to give greater attention to the principles of sustainable development in construction engineering and the sustainable development of the built environment.
