Open Access article funding

The SNSF covers the costs of publishing your article in a fully open access journal. Simply submit the invoice to our service partner ChronosHub. Articles in hybrid journals are not funded.

By funding open access articles, the SNSF enables free access to publications. In this way, we support the dissemination of knowledge that originates from SNSF-funded research. You can receive funding if you make your article accessible free of charge via the gold road.

The gold road to open access publishing is the direct publication of scientific results in a fully open access journal. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) gives an overview of quality-checked open access journals that work with peer review. The Journal Checker Tool provides information on how you can fulfil the SNSF's open access requirements for certain journals.

We cover the publisher's services for quality assurance, production and distribution through the payment of an article processing charge (APC). The SNSF may reduce unreasonably high APCs.

Please note: the SNSF does not provide funding for publications in hybrid journals. There is a paywall to read these journals. Researchers also have to pay a fee to ensure the free accessibility of their articles. This results in access to research findings being paid for twice. By choosing the hybrid route, you do, however, fulfil the SNSF's open access requirement.

How can you receive funding for your article? Our service partner ChronosHub ensures easy processing of the publication charges. In just a few steps, you can forward your APC invoice to them for payment. You can find more detailed information about this process on the ChronosHub website.
