NCCR Microbiomes

2020 series

Home institutions: University of Lausanne, ETH Zurich

Communities of microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists perform essential roles in health, agriculture and the environment. The National Centre of Competence in Research "Harnessing microbial communities for health and the environment" (NCCR Microbiomes) is developing new tools to study these microbiomes, combat pathogens and promote useful organisms. It looks at microbial communities in humans, animals, plants, and natural and industrial environments. The NCCR Microbiomes brings together experts in the fields of human infections, animal and plant gut microbiomes, genomics and computational biology, applied and environmental microbiology, and microbial ecology and evolution. In order to achieve its goals, the NCCR Microbiomes is organised into six interconnected research modules or ‘work packages’: Translational microbiome research, Microbiomes in animal systems, Plant microbiomes, Environmental microbiomes, Synthetic and engineered microbiomes, and Microbiome data analysis and modeling.

NCCRs are financed through grants awarded by the SNSF, but also from other sources. The home institution involved in the NCCR also contributes a substantial amount of money. The available overall budget of the NCCR is further increased by monetary contributions from the project participants and third-party funds, which are generally invested by industrial companies.
