Another milestone has been reached in the SNSF's reorganisation project. The Foundation Council has elected the Academic Board, which will manage the Research Council's activities from 1 January 2025 onwards.

The Academic Board is the governing body of the Research Council. Its role is to define funding policy, allocate roles within the Research Council and ensure the quality and fairness of the funding procedures for the researchers and projects that the SNSF supports.

The Academic Board comprises seven members, each with a four-year term of office, which can be renewed once. The Foundation Council made its decision based on a meticulous selection carried out by a nomination committee, which analysed the numerous applications and conducted a series of interviews.

Chaired by Torsten Schwede, who has already been elected, the new Academic Board of the Research Council will comprise a diverse and well-balanced team of individuals. It will bring together the scientific and strategic skills and experience needed to meet the challenges of the years to come.

Angelika Kalt, Director of the SNSF since 2016, will also be part of the Academic Board, as a non-voting advisory member.

The team comprises four people who are already active in the current Research Council, including Vice Presidents Laura Bernardi and Stuart Lane, both members of the actual Presiding Board.

The new Academic Board will take office on 1 January. Torsten Schwede will succeed Matthias Egger, who will complete his second four-year term as President of the Research Council at the end of December. The new Research Council will be elected in December and will take up its duties on 1 April 2025.
