Between 2000 and 2018, 730 highly qualified researchers received an SNSF professorship. Our analysis shows that the funding scheme successfully advanced their careers on the way to permanent professorships or equivalent positions.

The SNSF professorships were launched in 1999. The purpose of the funding scheme was to enable highly qualified early-career researchers across all disciplines to take an important step in their academic careers. SNSF professorships not only enabled grantees to lead their own research team in Switzerland, but also gave them the status and title of assistant professor for the duration of the grant.
